Thank You Mr Conn, Personally I see nothing wrong with being born, and raised in Pittsburgh as I have quite a few friends there. I have become sensitive, to a fault I suppose, to Northerners claiming to be Texans,or Floridians, etc. because I feel that if the truth were widely know about that unnecessary war it might just save this Nation for our children, and theirs. I can find very little about Mr Paul that I do not like. I had not read, until your comment, that Mr Paul had criticized Mr Lincoln. It seems most Americans don't dare.

This article would suffice to show what an eager mind is/was that of the Yankee, to embrace the idea that the war was about freeing the slaves, or ( for the first years, to ' save the union ', when Mr Lincoln said that it was to collect tariffs. Mr Meyers wishes, apparently, to be sure that these Negros were in fact " slaves " when he has no way of making a fact of the observation. Complete Confederate Soldier ? I suppose he wishes to invent terms as well as fantasize about why a Yankee soldier would be a Yankee soldier in the first place. I agree with Mr B McCLanahan through the whole of of this essay, and enjoyed reading it very much. The only idea that I find fault in is the insinuation that Mr Obama is the one leading current enemy of the original vision of our founding fathers. The apparent aims of the Republican Party are the same as they always were, Big, intrusive, centrally based power, while at the same instant, taking refuge in the Bible, and patriotism. I can not think of a Republican administration during my lifetime ( 1950-2011 )that was any different. They make a lot of noise about the evil of Big government, but never do anything about it. In fact through the so called Patriot Act, and the continued assault upon abortion rights, and other issues they continue to seek to expand their central control, and intrusiveness. B Obama is not the only enemy we have, only a few week ago Newt Gingrich compared his 'work' to that of Lincoln. But I see this sort of denial quite a bit these days. The Republican Party is the same now as it was in 1861. The Democratic Party is but little, if any, different.

I see Mr C Meyer has commented in his usual style a few years ago. I keep wondering if he was drunk, or something, because I can make little, if any, sense of it. I must say that I have never, before this moment, heard, or read that anyone claimed that any Northern soldier fought for " the right of self government ". I have been told, by various means that Northern men fought to " Save the Union ", fought against slavery, fought for glory,plunder, adventure, hope of material gain ( some immigrants were promised already cleared land, with buildings on them ), and because they were forced to serve. I, until now, have never had anyone claim that they were interested in " Self Determination ", shoot they were obviously trying to stop the Southern States from doing just that. The idea that the Southern States were hypocritical because of slavery is preposterous. In the North as, in the South, black African slaves, even to one eighth black African blood, was considered as livestock, not quite human,etc. As repulsive as that is, it is also true. How many horses,cows/oxen etc were held in bondage in the North or South, and not one peep in protest from those that were allowed to bring their slaves for sale in Southern markets before they were forced to free them. The idea of slavery is an absolute abomination, but only black soldiers, and abolitionists ( What? 2% ) could claim that they fought to free the slaves. Perhaps Mr Meyer would be interested in doing some searches about what Charles Dickens had to say about his fantasy crusade to save a union by force of arms, or to free slaves by not freeing them. All these Republicans have to support their arguments seem to be the lies that they themselves have concocted. What did Grant have to say about emancipation and the war? If memory serves, he said that if he had known he was fighting to free slaves, he would have fought for the other side.

I agree with the SCV, and Mr Block. However I am not as nice as Mr Block when it comes to ' Buffalo Soldiers '. I don't mean to be too harsh when it comes to private soldiers, and after the War ( 1865 ) these men would have needed jobs like all working class people do. Federal actions, if not publicly stated policy, more than seemed to be of a genocidal nature. Somewhat like being a private in the Nazi SS. Just because the native people fought for their geographic homeland doesn't make it a noble cause to kill them all in order to take whatever homes they had from them in order to please a bunch of Republicans. It would seem that Mr C Meyer skipped the first two sentences. What a nice little essay. I had missed reading it somehow. I would guess that Mr Meyer is a Republican, just a guess. He strikes me as someone from FOX ( Faux ) News. Last evening I heard a little of a debate ( near the end ) that seemed to be a rant between two persons that agreed with each other that banking regulations had made bankers criminals for without those regulations bankers would not be criminals. All I can say is that if it were legal to rob their bank, we could rob it and not be guilty of anything. If one has enough money, one can make anything legal, even mass murder, genocide, etc.

I just found this site also Great picture Mr. Conn, I do know you can visit the Pocket Park in New Hope and the trenches across the road beside the white church that were dug by the soldiers during the Battle of New Hope Church and you can also visit Picketts Mill State Park just a few miles away that was the second Battle fought in Paulding County and a Confederate Victory.

Excellent and concise in summary of the acts and intentions of this monster, Lincoln. A.T. Bledsoe, a fellow Kentuckian who served with Lincoln for a decade at the bar in Illinois said of Lincoln, "His every waking moment was consumed with a thirst for distinction."
He, of course, had no scruples about slavery; to increase his power and possibility of success in law and politics he married the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky land owner and slaver, which apparently bother him not at all.
It is excellent that Valerie points out the madness and blindness of men like O'Reilly, Hannity and Levin, who all lavish praise and encomium upon the very President whose acts and policies laid the foundation for all the things they say they stand against.
How can men with reasonable intelligence be so blind?
I, personally, am convinced their problem is not intellectual. It s a problem of the will. They found the "truth" they wanted to hear in 5th grade history and among the lies their fathers told them, and they WILL hear nothing contrary, regardless of the massive amount of evidence exposing Lincoln as corrupt, vicious, murderous, criminal and eaten up with greed and the lust for power.
My sense is until we tell the truth about Lincoln, the War and its consequences the nation will never heal, nor will the present decline turn around.
A Kingdom living by myths based upon lies cannot long stand.
Mr. O'Reilly is constantly repeating the mantra he loves so much, that America is a noble nation. No noble nation lives off myths that are manifestly lies. His "noble nation" is false on its face.
America has morphed into an Empire, utterly consolidated with the states little more than administrative units, there only to do the bidding of the Feds and well under its control. The sovereignty of the states is illusory, for there is no law they make or policy they defend that cannot be nullified by force of Federal mandate-and Federal troops if necessary.
Any state law appears to stand for the moment only because the Feds permit it to do so--for now, or just haven't gotten around to over ruling it.
This is all the consequences of Mr. Lincoln's consolidation of power in Washington.
Perhaps Mr. O'Reilly, with his big spin machine, thinks he's doing something noble in repeating the lies about Lincoln. But lies are never noble. Perhaps Mr. O'Reilly thinks he is trying to get Americans to buck up and take heart as the nation declines under the heavy hand of the Behemoth on the Potomac.
If this was his intention then Lincoln is the very worst of American presidents to use as an example of encouragement.
But the facts are, it is hard to know what a nationalist (not a patriot) like Mr. O'Reilly has in his mind---but easy to know what is not in his mind from his statements about Lincoln: the truth.
The lies O'Reilly perpetuates are never good, but they are of particular harm presently. A people in peril, more than any other thing, need a good strong dose of the truth--for truth is the only thing that will turn us from our present path of destruction.

Thanks for posting this photo. I live in Graham, Texas, and was a member of a local S.C.V. chapter when we had one. I guess this photo was taken sometime in the fall of a year.

A friend, Lee Allen, has tried to brighten this plaque up using Brasso but Brasso doesn't work on this type of metal.

Years ago I subscribed to a publication styled "Signs of the Times". It was a trade publication for the signboard industry. As I recall, it was out of Tiffin, Ohio. I have not been able to find it, so it must be out of publication. I think I got it during the 1980's. At any rate, there was usually a one page ad in it from a vendor advertising a particular product for cleaning and brightening this type of metal. I had some back issues but threw them out. And forgot to catch the information therein on that cleaning product.

We have a large but finite number of these memorials around the South that used this metal type. If any one out there can score/locate a cache of back issues of this magazine in a library somewhere, post the info here and I will track the ad down. The ad had color before and after pictures and the contrast and results were amazing.
